What an Awesome God!!

We all had had them.  Those situations that happen that when you stand back and look at it you realize that what just happened was not a coincidence.  That there is a God orchestrating everything under the sun and every once in a while you get a glimpse of what he is doing and you can only stand back and say WOW!  But I am getting ahead of myself, lets go back a few days.

We have been officially recognized as a Nonprofit Organization for a little over a month.  We knew the initial start up was going to be hard as there are a number of things that we need to get in place before we can really pushing on towards our mission.  One item that was high on our priority list was getting funding going for the transition home in Donetsk.  We had posted a blog and on Facebook about the need and we decided to let God work.  While we were thinking financially, God had another idea.

A women from Northwest Indiana had messaged me (Matthew) about how she can help.  She was not able to support us financially but wanted to use her gifts to help where she could.  After a few emails back and forth about how she can help the conversation took a different direction.  Here is that portion of the email.

Also, there's a girl that I really have had on my mind. She is listed on Reeces Rainbow (Karen) and is Donetsk (sp), Ukraine. She has no special need but has a younger sister that does which is why she is listed. She has turned 16 and is in danger of aging out. I thought I read that you had contacts there. Is it possible to connect them somehow?. I really really hate to see this girl fall through the cracks. To top it off shes Roma so that seems that life will be doubly hard for her. If there's anything I can do, Id love to help. Thanks so much.

I really wasn't sure how we could help, but it was worth at least looking into.  I decided to email her back to get more details, I also carbon copied Shane on the email as he was the one with the connections in Donetsk.

I have attached Shane Lewis in this email.  He has the connections in Donetsk, and is going to the Ukraine later this month.  What do you have in mind as far as trying to help this girl out?  We love it that you have a heart for orphans and would love to try to assist you in whatever way you might want to help this girl.  Please share with us what God has put on your heart.

And she replied.

Well.... I'm not sure what is feasible. Obviously the most ideal thing would be if someone adopted her and her sister (They have to be adopted together at this point) but I know that's realistically probably not going to happen. If you have the contacts in Donetsk could there be someway to connect her with them? Maybe some church there would be willing to help her with housing, school, a support system etc...I don't know if some type of student visa here to the states would be possible either. This girl has just broken my heart! Let me know what you think please!

This email was sent to me so I forwarded it over to Shane knowing he would have some ideas.  Shane has adopted 5 children from the Ukraine, first a set of 4 girls, and most recently his daughter Lakshmi joined the family a few months back.  Shane and his wife Diana are going back later this month two adopt two more daughters.   Shane has the connections in Donetsk, if there was someone that had a chance of looking into Karen while in Donetsk it would be Shane.  It was long shot, but I figured it was a chance.  Imagine mt surprise when I read his email.

The girl she is talking about was Lakshmi's best friend when they were 5. She was also good friends with Ella, the girl that we just took into our transition home. The orphanage they were in together closed and they were separated  Lakshmi was super excited when I showed her the picture today.
 We do have an opening in our transition home. I'm not making any promises. If you'd like I could go and visit her when we are in Donetsk.
 There is a possibility of bringing her here on a student visa, but it is very difficult before the age of 18. If she were to stay with us for two years, then we could file the paperwork to bring her here to study, if that is what you wanted to do at that time.

Now I cannot be the only one with goose bumps after reading that.  There are estimated 147 million orphans worldwide.  This is not a coincidence.  We don't know how this story is going to play out.  But this small glimpse of the way that God is working all things to his good was humbling to say the least.

I think it is time to quit looking at 147 million orphans and not seeing 147 million faces.  We need to start this journey by looking at one orphan, it we can change the life of just one orphan any amount of effort will be worthwhile.  Maybe this is the one.  Say hello to Karen.

The Petersen Family

Introducing our family on a website about orphans, adoption, grace, and love is answered prayer for us! We are on a journey that we can't truly believe we are really on and yet I think we knew we would be here one day! Being adopted at 2 1/2 from the foster care system in Kentucky, I have always had a heart for adoption!! Though, by God's grace, we never had trouble getting pregnant and have three wonderful children. After deciding if we were gong to have more children or not, we got pregnant and weeks later I had a miscarriage! It was very difficult, as any miscarriage is! But I believe God put something in our hearts after that, we knew our family wasn't complete. We just didn't know what that meant! Years later of prayers, talking, and unbelievable and undeniable guidance we began the process of adopting from the foster care system! We started in May this year and today we were hoping to sign our home study, but you all know the expectations and reality of adoption does not match sometimes! So, I pray next week we will sign our home study for foster care and go up for approval for SNAP this month! We know our daughter is already picked for us, as all your children are picked for yours! We ask for your prayers for faith as we wait for His timing to bring her home! God bless you all, you all have a special place in our hearts and prayers! I love watching and reading your stories of God's plan unfolding for each of us for His kingdom and His glory!!

Orphan Mission in Ukraine - The Next Step!

By God's provision and Grace we are starting our second year of operating a transition home in Donetsk, Ukraine. Each year we are able to take in 2 to 3 girls and help them by keeping them out of a bad environment, teach them life skills and introduce them to our Saviour Jesus Christ. We are also able to offer Bible study, English classes and cooking classes to many more orphans each week. Thanks to the volunteer work on our staff Anya Bilyo and Olya Mandrika we are able to do all of this on a budget of just $6000 a year! We are looking to raise the finances to fund this operation for the next year.

Meet Vova! Vova is an amazing young man that started volunteering with us this past year. He is the son of a Pastor, a musician and has a HUGE heart for God. He toured several different orphanage with us this summer and we saw right away his great ability to connect with the children. This year we hope to add Vova to our staff working daily in the largest Orphanage in Donetsk. He currently volunteers in his free time, but can only do so much because he has to also work full time.

We want you all to understand why this is a much needed next step. It hit us this year while were reflecting on our work in the region that we spend so much of our time making little progress with the older orphans. We realized the reason for this is because they have so many self- taught destructive behaviours that are so deep seeded. It was then that it became obvious that if we could reach these children on a daily basis at a younger age, we could make a real difference in their lives! We have an opportunity to do this now and put Vova to work full time for only $4200. which covers his wage and allows him a small budget to purchase supplies!

We ask that you consider partnering with us? For such a small investment the impact on the lives of orphans could be huge.

Shane Lewis and his wife Diana will be traveling to Ukraine in 2 weeks, we are praying for the financial support to be able to implement this outreach program when they are there.

The Hamstra Family

Part of our goal at The Orphan Mission is to spotlight adoptive families that we have partnered with.  From time to time we will pick an adoptive family to highlight.  This week we are highlighting the Hamstra family.  They are two weeks away from meeting their son in India for the first time.  Here is a short bio about the family.  

The theme of this Hamstra family is “never say never” and no we’re not Justin Bieber fans We have found that no matter what plan we place in our lives, God loves to laugh at us and show His plan that is more than we could ever ask or imagine. Here’s how the newest chapter came about…

After marrying in 2000 Jack and I decided to start a family. We had no trouble conceiving our first daughter Emma in 2002 and then our son Jackson in 2005. We had always said that we would have four or five children but after Jackson came along we had a peace and decided he was completing our family. That peace must’ve just meant biologically.

In March of 2009 I had a little troubled boy that I grew a very strong attachment with that I was working with in the church’s children’s choir. I had heard that he may be put into foster care and Jack and I immediately prayed about what to do and then started our foster care training. In July 2009 we received our license. This boy was never placed in foster care but we knew God had been leading us to this so we figured we would continue and help whatever children God gave us to care for. We said over and over “we are not in this to adopt.” We only wanted to foster because we knew how great the need was for foster homes and we really wanted to give children a glimpse of support and unconditional love and to mentor birth parents.

After several respite placements and many months of training and preparing, we got a call in April of 2010 about possibly accepting a foster-to-adopt placement of a special and medically needy two year old little girl. We prayed and met her and fell in love and Laila came to live with us permanently in July 2010 and her adoption was final in December 2010.

So, our family was complete and crazy and busy and we just knew this was it for us. Boy, what do we know!?! It was time to renew our foster license in July 2011 and we had thought we would close our home but then found out we only needed our CPR training renewed to keep our home open so we figured why not keep it. That got us starting to think about whether or not our family was really complete. We talked about all of this medical knowledge that we have gained from Laila and how many people are scared away by things that don’t even phase us anymore. We looked into some domestic children but nothing seemed quite right. On Oct 14, 2011 we attended a Steven Curtis Chapman concert for Emma’s ninth birthday and in the middle of the concert Jack leaned over to me and said “I think our son is in Africa.” We found a little boy in Ethiopia and just knew he was the one. God lined everything up gave us confirmation upon confirmation and so we jumped in. We spent 4 months praying and working and asking God to bring him home. On Feb 14 our world came crashing down. God had answered our prayers but just not in the way we had planned. Ashenafi’s parents decided to come and take him back. They were in a better place and could care for him again. While devastating for us, we knew this was the absolute best place for him to be. But what was God doing with us?!?

After a couple weeks Holt sent us a referral of another little boy in Africa but he just wasn’t ours. I can’t explain it to you, he just wasn’t. We re-examined what we felt God calling us to and told them that we did not want to take a healthy younger child from another family who had probably been waiting for years for a referral. We felt God calling us to take the child that truly had no chance without us. They asked if we’d be willing to change to India for a little boy named Ranjit who had been in his orphanage for several years and desperately needed a family. We prayed and just knew this was our son.

While it came as a shock to us too, this is where God is leading us and we couldn’t be happier. God used Ashenafi to lead us to Ranjit and in the process Ashenafi received hundreds of prayers that he never would have otherwise and we prayed his family back together. He was our foster son we never met

                                                      
We’ve grown a love for India in a way we didn’t know possible. We've grown and been stretched and cried and laughed and we wouldn't change a single minute of any of it. We have seen and known God is so many new ways through his bringing Ranjit to us. We truly believe this is something near and dear to God's heart and we're privileged to be a part of His mission and we're so excited to bring our son home soon!! We're hoping to travel to India the end of October to bring him home!

October already!

English Class

Wow, October is here already! Most of the kids we work with returned to School September 1st. Last week resumed a program we started last year with Pastor Gerald. Pastor Gerald is an American Pastor that comes in to our transition home one day a week and teaches English. The class is free of charge and is attended by mostly college and trade school students. The English class is usually Bible based and presents an opportunity for Pastor Gerald to share the Gospel.

Our good friend Anya who runs our transition home had this to say, "We had many people signed up for the english class that couldn't show up for the first class. It was a very special class today where Pastor Gerald could share his heart for these children. He said that the biggest thing he wanted them to do in life is to get to know God personally. It's nice to be successful in this life, to have a family and so on.. but our time on this earth is limited/ very short.. and eternity is very real. Young people turned into ears listening to him."

It is always an incredible joy to see young people eager to learn about God!

Birthday of an Orphan

For an orphan a birthday isn't usually something you look forward to. It is sometimes a painful reminder that another year has passed and still no one cares.

We do our best to with what we have to try and make this day special for as many of the children we work with as possible. This is what Anya (Anya works with us in our outreach program) had to say about Lilya's birthday:

"Lilya turned 18 and there was no one to wish her Happy Birthday. I asked my friends to make a celebration for her. I also asked many of my friends to call her. I asked them to say something like that they heard that a special girl had her birthday and they wanted to wish her Happy Birthday. Even though she didn't know who they were she knew they were Christians. Praise God for the opportunity!"

We celebrated another birthday this month as well!

This is Karina! She turned 15 this month. For her birthday Anya and Olya took her to the park, bought her some balloons and later treated her to a home cooked meal at our transition home in Donetsk. 

 I would say Karina really liked her balloons!

Dinner! The girls always seem to like coming over and cooking together. It is great fun and they get to learn how to cook which is a skill not usually taught to them.

Tough Month for Orphans

A Tough Month for Orphans

Each September many of the orphans that we have been working with for years begin the next phase in their life as an orphan in Eastern Europe. This is the month when many of them graduate from the orphanage and move on to Trade Schools. When we make the rounds to visit them at this time they all ask us for help with food to get them through the month. The reason is, when they leave the orphanage they are given a little less than $5 USD to survive on until their government stipend kicks in, which takes about 3 to 4 weeks. Many of them have not been taught to plan ahead, so often they spend their $5 right away.

We were able to help a few of them so far, but we have about 50 more that could use help. It costs about $25 to get them through the month. This is an urgent need! Would you please consider helping?

UPDATE

The chip-in counter wasn't working due to an error i made when setting it up...i'm learning though! BUT...we had some donations come in that allowed us to purchase food for 35 children to help them through this next week. We are still praying for provision to help about 15 more children as well as purchase food again next week to help them all through another week. By then their government stipend will kick in and they should be fine.
